Movement Monday: Enbridge Line 3

Hi, all!

Welcome (back) to our weekly newsletter, Movement Monday, wherein we offer an On the Level take on recent happenings in the climate movement.

This week, I want to highlight an issue that’s from my home state of Minnesota but that has also been gracing national media, left and right (pun intended): the Enbridge Line 3 tar sands oil pipeline.

I won’t spend too long describing the issue in detail as it has been written about extensively (read HERE and HERE to get started). But, a quick synopsis:

What’s the issue? Originating in the tar sands of Alberta, Canada, the new Line 3 pipeline, once constructed, would span all the way across northern Minnesota. On its way, it would cross the Leech Lake and Fond du Lac Reservations, the 1855, 1854, and 1842 treaty areas, and public lands, threatening the many freshwater resources and ecosystems and disregarding indigenous sovereignty.

What are people doing to stop it? So much!

  • In-person protests at current and future pipeline construction sites in northern MN
  • In-person demonstrations around the nation
  • Virtual calls to action to show support for the water protectors
  • Signing online petitions and pledges of resistance
  • Pressuring their lawmakers to resist the pipeline
  • Donating money and supplies to frontline water protectors
  • Writing op-eds in local newspapers
  • Divesting from and/or writing letters to banks that are financing the pipeline, such as Chase, Citi, Bank of America, and TD Bank
  • Putting up lawn signs
  • Spreading the word on social media, especially TikTok

Find out how to do these and more at the Line 3 Resistance Dashboard, On Ramps for the Movement to Stop Line 3, and Stop Line 3’s Take Action page

Here at On the Level, we know it can feel overwhelming or confusing to figure out how to get plugged into something like taking action against Enbridge Line 3, especially if you live far away from the site of resistance. And that’s where we come in: We want to make it as easy as possible for you to take action on important issues like Enbridge Line 3 and amplify our voices until those in power have to listen to what we’re saying. Come September 24th, 2021, we will have an online quiz that will filter by location, interests, and skills (much slicker than the above list) to get you plugged in to what matters most.

Join us by subscribing to our newsletter, sending it to friends and family, following us on our social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and/or donating to On the Level.

Thanks for reading, and see you on Friday for our Climate Culture newsletter!
